Vitale Announces Reelection Bid for
County Council in District 5,
March 22, 2006

SEVERNA PARK - Councilman Cathy Vitale announced this morning the she will seek reelection to her seat on the Anne Arundel County Council representing Severna Park, Arnold, the Broadneck peninsula, and nearby parts of Pasadena and Millersville.

In front of more than one hundred of her supporters at a breakfast fundraiser at Hellas in Millersville, Councilman Vitale said, "My dad taught me never to leave a job until I'd finished it.  And I'm not finished."

Councilman Vitale won in a landslide in 2002, rising from the junior minority member of the council to the majority chairman.  "I am proud of the teamwork and talent we now enjoy on the Council.  That was not always the case."

If reelected a second time in 2006, Councilman Vitale will serve her third term as the longest sitting councilman since term limits.  Term limits allow council members to serve only two elected terms, however she was appointed to her first term after Councilman Cliff Roop's sudden death in January 2000.

"Her knowledge of the lay of the land and her leadership were important to us new members of the council in 2002," said current Council Chairman Ed Reilly.  "We've accomplished a lot and we can do it again."

Councilman Vitale cited improved teamwork on the Council, a track record of success on important issues, and a "laundry list" of things yet to do as her inspirations to stay on.  Her priorities include a ban on roadside panhandling for all ages and causes, fine-tuning of the Small Area Plan, funding for improvements to (or replacement of) aging schools, and tax-incentives for local businesses that invest in environmental clean up efforts.

"We've seen an increase in the number of businesses who are willing to invest private dollars in improving our environment - they live, work and play here too," she said.  "Why tax residents when we can offer tax-incentives and get the job done with greater community involvement?"
